Defender Golf Game

Defender is a golf money game where one player defends the hole against the rest of the group.

The defender's job is simple: hold off the field. If nobody beats the defender, the defender wins. If another player beats the defender, the defender loses.

Defender is similar to Banker, but the main difference is that Defender usually creates one field challenge per hole instead of separate individual matchups against every player.

Best for

Defender works best with 3 to 5 players.

It is especially good for:

  • 3-player groups
  • 4-player groups
  • 5-player groups
  • groups that want one player against the field
  • groups that want a simple rotating challenge

Handicaps

Handicaps are optional.

Defender can be played gross or net. If handicaps are used, each player receives strokes based on their course handicap and the course handicap row on the scorecard.

Net Defender is usually better for mixed-skill groups.

How Defender works

On each hole, one player is the defender.

The defender plays against the rest of the group.

Basic flow:

  1. Choose the defender for the hole.
  2. Everyone plays the hole.
  3. Compare the defender's score against the rest of the field.
  4. If nobody beats the defender, the defender wins.
  5. If one or more players beat the defender, the defender loses.
  6. Ties are handled based on the group's rules.

The defender usually rotates each hole so everyone gets a chance to defend.

Simple Defender example

Four players are playing Defender for $5.

Hole 1:

  • Player A is the defender
  • Player A makes net 4
  • Player B makes net 5
  • Player C makes net 4
  • Player D makes net 6

Nobody beats Player A.

Player A successfully defends the hole and wins the bet.

Another example:

  • Player A is the defender
  • Player A makes net 4
  • Player B makes net 5
  • Player C makes net 3
  • Player D makes net 6

Player C beats the defender.

Player A fails to defend the hole and loses the bet.

Defender vs Banker

Defender and Banker are similar, but they are not exactly the same.

Banker

In Banker, the banker usually has separate matchups against each player.

The banker can beat one player, lose to another, and push another on the same hole.

Example:

  • Banker makes net 4
  • Player B makes net 5: banker wins
  • Player C makes net 4: push
  • Player D makes net 3: banker loses

Defender

In Defender, the defender is usually playing against the field as one challenge.

If nobody beats the defender, the defender wins.

If any player beats the defender, the defender loses.

That makes Defender cleaner when the group wants one simple result per hole.

Defender rotation

The defender usually rotates in a fixed order.

Example with four players:

  • Hole 1: Player A defends
  • Hole 2: Player B defends
  • Hole 3: Player C defends
  • Hole 4: Player D defends
  • Hole 5: Player A defends again

Some groups use different defender rules, such as:

  • previous hole winner becomes defender
  • previous defender keeps defending until beaten
  • defender is chosen randomly
  • defender rotates by tee order

The fixed rotation version is the simplest.

Does the defender win ties?

Groups handle ties differently.

Common options:

Ties favor the defender

If the defender ties the best score on the hole, the defender successfully defends.

Example:

  • Defender net 4
  • Player B net 4
  • Player C net 5
  • Player D net 6

Nobody beat the defender, so the defender wins.

This is the cleanest Defender rule.

Ties push

If the defender ties the best score, the hole pushes and nobody wins.

Example:

  • Defender net 4
  • Player B net 4
  • Player C net 5
  • Player D net 6

The defender was not beaten, but also did not win outright. The hole pushes.

Groups should agree on this before starting.

Defender payout styles

Defender can be paid a few ways.

Defender wins from each player

If the defender successfully defends, each other player pays the defender.

Example:

  • Bet: $5
  • Defender holds off the field
  • Each of the other three players pays the defender $5
  • Defender wins $15 total

If the defender fails, the defender pays each player or pays the player who beat them, depending on the group's rules.

Defender pays the field

If any player beats the defender, the defender pays every other player.

Example:

  • Bet: $5
  • Defender loses because one player beats them
  • Defender pays $5 to each of the other players

This makes defending risky because one bad hole can cost the defender against the whole group.

Defender pays only the winner

Some groups make the defender pay only the player who beat them with the best score.

Example:

  • Bet: $5
  • Defender loses
  • Player C has the best score
  • Defender pays Player C $5

This is simpler and less punishing.

Recommended simple version

For casual groups, the cleanest Defender format is:

  • one defender per hole
  • fixed defender rotation
  • gross or net scoring
  • ties favor the defender
  • if nobody beats the defender, the defender wins from each player
  • if anyone beats the defender, the defender pays the field

This creates a clear "defend or lose" challenge every hole.

Gross Defender

Gross Defender uses actual scores only.

Example:

  • Defender makes 4
  • The field makes 5, 5, and 6
  • Defender wins

Gross Defender works best when players are similar skill levels.

Net Defender

Net Defender uses handicap-adjusted scores.

Example:

  • Defender makes gross 4 and receives no stroke
  • Player B makes gross 5 and receives 1 stroke
  • Player B's net score is 4

Depending on the tie rule, this may either count as a successful defense or a push.

Net Defender is usually better for groups with mixed handicaps.

Defender with birdies

Some groups add birdie bonuses.

Common options include:

  • defender birdie doubles the bet
  • any birdie doubles the bet
  • birdies are paid separately as dots
  • no birdie bonuses

Example:

  • Bet is $5
  • Defender wins the hole with birdie
  • Birdie double is on
  • Each other player pays the defender $10 instead of $5

Birdie bonuses are optional and should be agreed on before the round.

Defender with 5 players

Defender works well with 5 players because it avoids uneven team splits.

One player defends the hole against the other four players.

Example:

  • Player A is defender
  • Player A net score: 4
  • Other players: 5, 5, 6, 6

Nobody beats Player A, so Player A successfully defends.

If the bet is $5 and the defender wins from each player, Player A wins $20 total.

Plus handicaps

Plus-handicap players can be handled the same way as other net games.

Give back to course

A plus golfer gives strokes back on the easiest handicap holes.

Example:

  • A +2 golfer gives back strokes on handicap holes 18 and 17
  • On one of those holes, gross 3 on a par 4 becomes adjusted 4 for net scoring

Normalize to zero

Some groups normalize the lowest handicap to zero and add the difference to everyone else.

Example:

  • +2, 4, 6, 10 becomes 0, 6, 8, 12

Groups should agree before the round how plus handicaps are handled.

Common Defender rules

Before starting, the group should agree on:

  • defender rotation
  • gross or net scoring
  • bet amount
  • whether ties favor the defender or push
  • whether defender pays the whole field or only the best player
  • whether defender wins from each player or wins a fixed pot
  • whether birdies create bonuses
  • how handicap strokes are applied
  • how plus handicaps are handled

Defender payout example

Five players are playing Defender for $5.

Rule:

  • ties favor defender
  • defender wins from each player if successful
  • defender pays each player if beaten

Hole 6:

  • Player A is defender
  • Player A net score: 4
  • Player B net score: 5
  • Player C net score: 4
  • Player D net score: 6
  • Player E net score: 5

Nobody beats Player A. Player C ties, but ties favor the defender.

Player A successfully defends.

Payout:

  • Player B pays Player A $5
  • Player C pays Player A $5
  • Player D pays Player A $5
  • Player E pays Player A $5

Player A wins $20 total.

Another example:

  • Player A is defender
  • Player A net score: 4
  • Player B net score: 3
  • Player C net score: 5
  • Player D net score: 4
  • Player E net score: 6

Player B beats the defender.

Player A fails to defend and pays the field.

If the bet is $5, Player A loses $20 total.

Strategy

Defender rewards steady play.

When you are the defender, the goal is to avoid giving the field an easy chance to beat you. A safe par or net par can be very valuable.

When you are attacking the defender, you do not always need to beat everyone. You just need to beat the defender.

That makes Defender a fun pressure game because every hole has a clear target.

Why use a Defender scorecard app?

Defender is simple, but the payouts can change based on tie rules, field payouts, handicap strokes, and who is defending each hole.

A scorecard app can track:

  • defender rotation
  • gross scores
  • net scores
  • handicap strokes
  • whether the defender held off the field
  • tie rules
  • birdie bonuses
  • running money totals

Golf Betting Games keeps the defender results and payouts organized so the group can focus on the round.
